Blue Ridge
Relay - September 9th 2006
The 208 Mile Blue Ridge Relay, which is one of the longest running
relay races in the United States, takes place in the picturesque
Blue Ridge and Black Mountains of Virginia and North Carolina. The
field consists of maximum 12 person (6 person minimum) teams that
rotate through 36 transition areas as they cover the 208-mile distance
of the race. Each relay team member runs 3 legs of varying lengths
and difficulty and covers an average total distance of 16.6 miles.
The runners rotate in a set order once the race begins and are required
to follow this rotation until the final runner finishes in Asheville,
North Carolina!
Amber completed
three legs of 8.2, 5.7 and 4.4 miles. The race lasted a total of
22 hours with Amber's team not only taking first place, but also
setting a new course record!.

Ache
Around The Lake - September 23rd 2006
Hundreds of
feet filled the curvy, hilly roads that surround Lake Lanier, NC
on Saturday. Runners descended on Lake Lanier to raise money for
the American Cancer Society at the first annual “Ache Around the
Lake.
”
People came from all over the area and as far away as Arizona to
enjoy the serenity of walking or running around Lake Lanier. “Our
community came out in force,” event organizer Katie Malone said.
“They donated, worked, volunteered, and walked. “It was much larger
than I expected.”
In
all, 218 people registered for the race, and the event raised between
$3,000 and $4,000, which will be donated for cancer research. The
runners, who were from all age groups, gathered on Butter Street.
They stretched, jogged and did whatever else they needed to do to
get ready for the race. Some were serious runners. Some were curious
runners. Some were inexperienced runners. Some just wanted to come
out and walk to get some exercise. At 8 a.m., they took off around
Lake Lanier. Less than half an hour later, the first runners crossed
the finish line at the Lake Lanier dam. Stuart Moran, 30, won the
race with a time of 25:01. Amber Moran posted the best time for
a female in the race. In the 12 and under group, Miller Hogan won
for the boys and Gabrielle Clark won for the girls. The success
of this event, which was the brainchild of Scarlette Tapp, showed
that the community would respond to a race of this magnitude, Malone
said. “It has been a long time since Tryon has had a running and
walking event and the turn out just goes to show that people will
participate,” Malone said. Malone and Tapp said they have big plans
for future races. The success this year is something to build on,
Malone said. “(The race) was bigger and better that I could have
imagined,” Malone said. “This is just the beginning.”
